In loving memory of Flora Young

Well done good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:21
This site is a tribute to Flora Young.
Flora died after a short illness on 15th April aged 90. She will be greatly missed by her children Paul, Ruth and Sheila. Grandchildren Rachael, Sarah, Alex, Chris, Paul, Emma and Matthew and seven Great Grandchildren, as well as other family and friends. Flora lived a full and extraordinary life, and her warm, caring nature enriched the lives of all she knew, and endeared her to them.

She was born in the small village of Dalry in Ayrshire, Scotland, the youngest of three girls. Her voracious reading fuelled her love of travel and adventure, and at 24 she left Scotland to work as a telephonist in Salisbury Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) She met and married Cedric Davies within a year, and Paul and Ruth were born in Salisbury before they moved to Indonesia where Sheila was born.

Political upheavals necessitated an evacuation from there, and the family was repatriated to Scotland before going on to live and work in Lagos, Nigeria. The family travelled extensively during this time, and she saw most of the world.

Returning to the UK, she lived briefly in Cheltenham and Chester before settling in Sevenoaks, Kent for 40 years. Flora worked at Amersham Medical Centre as a receptionist and was deeply involved in the life of the Vine Evangelical Church running various groups, being a friend to many and generally being the life and soul of that community.

Widowed by Cedric’s sudden death in 1987, she travelled to India as a volunteer in an orphanage.
In 1992 she met and married Dr Bill Young, moved to his home in Underriver, and took his whole family to her heart. Bill and Flora continued to travel extensively in the UK and New Zealand and East Africa.

Following Bill’s death in 2013, she moved to Rugby to be nearer her children. She was a faithful member of St Georges, Hillmorton, and made many new friends. In January 2017 she moved to Dewar Close residential home, and attended Bilton Evangelical Church for a while. She coped with the difficulties of advancing age with grace and humour, always delighting in the simplest things and appreciating those who cared for her. Her deep lifelong faith in God shone through her life and demeanour and gave her strength and courage to the end.

Flora and Cedric were very active members of the Gideons for many years, and Flora has requested that any donations made in her memory be given to

Thoughts

We attended North Street Gospel Hall, Dalry before we were married and knew Flora and her family from then. In fact Flora's Dad, Tommy Alexander baptised both Kenneth and me when we were 17 years old. Fast forward many years to a Gideon National Convention held in Birmingham where we had the joy of meeting Flora and Cedric again. In Decembet 1987 we moved from Leamington Spa to Surrey and straight away made contact with Flora. Sadly Cedric was called home a week or so later. We continued to meet up with Flora and had good times together mainly through our Gideon work when we spoke at Women's meetings and met at branch meetings. We moved back to Leamington in 1990 where Flora visited us on many occasions and we spoke at length about the past. We were so pleased when she came to live in Rugby and our friendship was a very important link with the past for all of us. Flora was so full of fun and thankfulness. On our last visit in July last year we had a lovely time with her recalling many friends from our past in Dalry. She had such a lovely warm personality and we shall miss her. What a wonderful, kind and gracious woman of God! Flora was such a blessing to us during our time in Sevenoaks and at VEC...we will never forget her. She and Bill were our neighbours when we were renting Black Charles Barn from Max and Sue, and we had many wonderful times with them both. Sending our deepest condolences to her family. Much Love, Richard, Caron, Kaitlin and Robert Andrews (Johannesburg, South Africa)

Our dear Flora will be remembered with love and fondness. What an inspiration she was. A room was lit by her vivacious smile and her warmth and generosity shone through. I’ll never forget Flora telling me that hospitality wasn’t about what you served but by the warmth in which you welcomed people. Boy- did she done that well. “Some of my best moments have been serving beans on toast.” She would say with a glint in her eye. You will be missed. Love Natalie Duan
